Frugal Racing win the 2017 MSVT Trackday Championship

2017 was a very exciting year for Frugal Racing. We entered a 1997 1.6L K-Series Supersport into the MSVT Trackday Championship to prove the competitiveness of a Seven against equivalent power to weight ratio racing cars.

Weighing in at just over 600kg with driver our Caterham is less than half the weight of most of our competitors, but with just 135bhp it was also less than half as powerful.

The season ebbed and flowed with the first few rounds proving difficult for our nimble Supersport. Donington park, Snetterton 200 and Silverstone National all offering the more powerful saloon cars the advantage. After a DNF at the first round in Donington, we took what we could from the others, scoring a sixth and a third respectively.

From there the battle moved to Rockingham, another circuit with an extremely fast first sector but this time with an infield which allowed our light weight Seven to come into it's own, securing our first and only win of the season.

From there on the championship went to three more circuits which offered an excellent balance of performance to us and the saloons we were surrounded by. We secured podiums at Snetterton 300 and Brands hatch GP before making our way to the final round at Oulton park.

In truth by the time we got there we were barely hanging on to any championship hopes, but an extremely fortunate weekend allowed us to scrape away with the title trophy.

What an unbelievable season it was. Massive highs and major lows, but here we are...

A huge thank you to our sponsors, without whom this would not have been possible. And an equally huge thank you to our wives, family and friends for the enormous support they have given all season!
